What I have noticed for a few years now is that; the 4th of July parade has turned into one big advertisement. Parades always advertise but, having just a vehicle driving down the strip with a business name on the side and throwing out Tootsie Rolls is not my childhood idea of a parade. This year, there was only a couple floats even made and it is sad to me.
I remember when I was a kid working on a real float for a parade. There was a wood frame more or less on a trailer with chicken wire attached to make a design then; we would take different colored tissue paper and stuff the holes in the chicken wire. When we were done, we had a colorful creation of a recognizable object.
I know people are busy but really, a car with a company name on the side with no decorations is just advertisement, not a parade in the traditional form. You might as well call the event a Rolling Billboard event. I personally would not be a part of a parade if all I had time to do was slap a sign on the sides of my vehicle and stop by the dollar store on the way to the event and buy a mixed bag of candy. That is probably why I just go watch the ‘parade’.
Just a praise to Butcher Block Meats … your float was awesome! ~b
